为了确保所有Windows用户都能顺利升级到Windows 7，微软日前公布了一项名为Windows 7 Upgrade Paths Test Matrix(Windows 7升级通道测试矩阵图)的计划，但随后就被微软删除了。但好在通过Bing搜索的快照还可以看到。

从Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP升级到Windows 7

但是从Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT4, Windows 2000 或Windows XP直接升级到Windows 7是肯定不可能的了。

从Windows Vista升级到Windows 7

根据Windows 7 Upgrade Test Matrix的描述，Windows Vista正式版(未安装SP1)是无法直接升级到Windows 7的。而安装了SP1或SP2的Vista版本则是可以直接升级到Windows 7的。同时，不支持的不支持的升级类型包括：

* 跨架构，比如，从32位升级到64位
* 跨语言
* 跨版本号，比如，从fre版本升级到chk版本
* 跨媒体类型

从Vista升级到Windows 7

* Windows Vista Starter (SP1, SP2)无法直接升级到Windows 7，哪怕是Starter版本
* Windows Vista Home Basic (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86)和 64-bit (x64)可以升级到 Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium和Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升级到Windows 7 Home Premium，Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Business (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升级到Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise， Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Enterprise (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升级到Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Ultimate (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升级到Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);

从 Windows 7升级到Windows 7

* 不支持Windows 7 M3 -  Windows 7 Beta
* 不支持Windows 7 M3 - Windows 7 RC
* 不支持Windows 7 M3 - Windows 7 RTM
* 支持Windows 7 Beta - Windows 7 RC
* 不支持Windows 7 Beta - Windows 7 RTM
* 支持Windows 7 RC - Windows 7 RTM

特殊版本Windows 7升级

由于，欧盟和韩国的反垄断法案，微软将会发布两个特别版的Windows 7，Windows 7 E和Windows 7 N(也有人称Windows 7 K)。

* Windows 7 Starter N,,E -  Windows 7 Starter N,E，Windows 7 Home Premium N,E，Windows 7 Professional N,E 和Ultimate N,E
*  Windows 7 Home Basic N,E - Windows 7 Home Basic N, E或Windows 7 Home Premium N,E Professional N,E和Ultimate N,E
* Windows 7 Home Premium N, E, 升级到 Windows 7 Home Premium N,E ，Windows 7 Professional N,E和 Ultimate N,E
* Windows 7 Professional N, E升级到Windows 7 Professional N, E和Windows 7 Ultimate N,E
* Windows 7 Enterprise N, E升级到Windows 7 Enterprise N,E
* Windows 7 Ultimate N, E升级到Windows 7 Ultimate N,E
